The Building Blocks of Thinking 4 Success

Higher Order Thinking

Each story along with the teacher's guide and classroom resources contributes to the development of a foundation stone of thinking about thinking and 4 building blocks encompassing the things we need to think about in order to be equipped with the skills necessary to take successful actions in an ever changing world.  These actions are practical and life long and can lead to dramatic personal, community, societal and global change.

Thinking about thinking is the foundation stone of Thinking 4 Success.

How we process information, our ability to ask and answer questions, reasoning, evaluation and creativity lie at the heart of thinking about thinking. To do this successfully requires making the processes that go on in our mind open to scrutiny and therefore open to improvement. This is best achieved through a process of collaboration.

Upon this foundation there are 4 building blocks to equip young people with a value base, an understanding of the nature of reality, a framework to build knowledge and learning and a basis on which to consider their surroundings. These provide a footing on which to take decisions and actions about life which results in practical and lifelong change.

The foundation stone and building blocks are supported by our emotions. Emotions, thinking and action are inseparable.

Building Block 1 Our Values

Values guide our decisions and our actions. It’s good to know what they are. This is particularly helpful in driving our attitudes towards others, for example, in respecting the rights of others and in understanding our responsibilities. Values are particularly helpful when facing difficult decisions.

Building Block 2 Me and My Reality

What is reality?  What is human existence about? Can it all be explained by science?  Can faith play a part?  It is important to understand our relationship with the reality that surrounds us and how that reality has an impact on us.  This can have a dramatic impact on the life choices we make.

Building Block 3 Knowing and Learning

There are things we know and things we will never know.  In essence, this boils down to knowing the difference between truth and belief and understanding how this can have an impact on our feelings and our actions.  A healthy scepticism can lead to an enquiring and open mind.

Building Block 4 Our Surroundings

We don't exist in a vacuum.  Growing and learning is about exploring the world around us.  This necessitates a consideration of our community, our society and of nature and the environment.  Other people are a part of our surroundings and our interactions with them help shape who we are.
